Rey was born 11/11/19 around Park Ridge. She received the following vaccinations: Bordetella. 1/7 DAPPV. 12/13, 12/27, 1/7 Dewormer. 12/20, 1/7 Heart worm. 12/20 Marquis paste. 12/20 Nitnpyram. 12/20 Flea and tick. 12/13 Looking for puppy advice We adopted Puppy Rey from Weight Way on Sunday and she started with diarrhea and vomited once after 24 hours with us. Took her to the vet on day 2, who gave her a shot for the vomiting, a fluid injection in her back, and sent us home with anti diarrhea antibiotics. Poor girl has not eaten more than 5 grains of rice and a few tiny pieces of chicken all day, as everything turns to diarrhea. She is sleeping most of the day. I am panicked to say the least. Anyone have words of puppy wisdom or advice? We are first time puppy family. Thanks. 😥

Has she been tested for giardia. it’s extremely common and very contagious especially at shelters. it can take months to go away. diarrhea is main symptom.

I've heard this happening to a lot of the puppies adopted throught Wright Way. Be careful.

Years ago I got a pup from somewhere else. They even sent him home with 3 syringes of anti-diarrhea meds. They told me he was up on his shots and deworming. He needed another deworming. Years later was told sometimes the base dewormer isn't effective enough. That sometimes they need to test the pup to determine which type of worm the pup has so they can give a very specific medicine. Call the vet in the morning and explain symptoms just like you wrote here. They will probably have you bring the pup in again for fluids. Also try hand feeding, sometimes they will eat or lick water off your hand even though not out of a bowl.

Did they do X-rays? Did the puppy eat something it shouldn’t have? Did they send you home with a gi diet? Is the puppy drinking? Blue pearl in north field is a 24/7 pet vet 8475645775 it’s very expensive but a good option if you feel this is an emergency.

Definitely get a second opinion. Could be parvo or some other serious parasite Wright way has a reputation for adopting out sick animals

Did they test for parvovirus?

Please make sure she doesnt have parvo or distemper. I have fostered puppies before and have had situations where they missed one booster and sadly needed major vet care. Fluids with IVs, meds. That does not sound normal or a new puppy thing at all.

If the diarrhea continues I would absolutely call vet again. Also add 1tbl of canned pumpkin to their food it helps settles tummies. My one is allergic to chicken so be careful w that. I personally would do bland boiled ground beef. No additives w the rice. A lot of dogs are sensitive to chicken. Hope you find your answers soon. I know adopting a puppy is supposed to be a happy time. Hang in there.

A lot of dogs that shelters have can be very sick as they bring them in so it’s not surprising to me but needs to be addressed as dog may can get dehydrated and that becomes dangerous. So I would stay tun d to your vet. I don’t know who you go to but you need to stay on top of this. My son adopted from shelter and dog had severe upper respiratory infection and tapeworms. Had to go to get a few times to get everything u der control Wrightway Animal shelter is well known facility. My rescue had to be taken to get a few times as well It is not uncommon to get a sick puppy as much as weall want them healthy

We had a rescue (not from wrightway although wrightway has a great reputation) Our pup had parvo spent days in the vet on an IV with no guarantee of making it. He made it and brought us joy for many years. I’d call the vet and talk with him or her. Good luck and prayers for your fur baby

As someone said here the dogs from Wrightway are rescued and checked out in their Southern facility. As soon as they arrive in Morton Grove they are treated with meds if needed. A puppy can get diarrhea just from change if food, the anxiousness of being in the cage with others and then taken home. You are expected to bring your new pup to a vet. Boiled chicken and rice diet is recommended.

Wrightway would never deliberately allow a sick dog to go home if he's symptomatic.

Keep talking with the people at WrightWay. They will want to know what you are experiencing. I used to volunteer there and know how much they care about each and every puppy. Your pup may be experiencing GI trauma due to stress, a change of food, food allergies, a medication side effect, or bacteria. Work with your vet and WrightWay. Also, PM me if you’d like. I have had over 20 foster dogs and pups and have learned a lot in the process.

The dog probably has parvo, I would get her tested. I read a few other stories about people who adopted puppies from Wright Way who had parvo and it's very deadly if not treated immediately.

Emergency vet immediately. She could have parvo? Has this dog been given any vaccinations recently? What is the age of the dog? This could be extremely serious and someone else’s dog recently (newly adopted) had the same symptoms and died.

Sounds like parvo. I recommend you beat down the doors at Wright-Way until you get in touch with them. I know for a fact that they will pay for parvo treatment with one of their vet partners. Your puppy probably has parvo and needs to be hospitalized ASAP. I'm a vet.

Our first golden retriever had diarrhea from day one no matter what food we tried, and we tried EVERYTHING. And he checked out fine medically. Eventually found that mixing baked potatoes with his food did the trick. I just made a bunch each week - plain - and added in about a quarter to a half potato with each feeding. Did for several years and he eventually didn’t need. But he did for quite awhile. My second golden - no issues at all. They are all different.

A friend of mine has a cocker spaniel who will soon be 1 year. Something was terribly wrong with the bordetellor shot and after many x-rays Blood tests - over $5, 000. 00 vet bills until she went to a specialist and discovered something was wrong with the vaccine. The puppy now is doing better with recovering. I’m not sure who she bought the puppy from. 💙🐶 for your puppy! Check what company makes the vaccines.

Did you keep her on the same food Wright way had her on? If you switched it that could cause this. Maybe a chicken allergy! Maybe try beef? Vet can give you canned ID food that was the only thing that helped my guy (provided she isn’t sick) I would go back to vet ASAP. Poor baby! Good luck ❤️❤️

Sue Peterson I swear by Fromm. quality food and treats. I avoid all other brands. so many treats made with crap from China. You will pay more for good quality food and treats but you will avoid costly vet visits to treat GI issues.

Cooked white rice mixed with hard boiled egg also good for diarrhea. Hoping she will be better soon. I could be totally off here but it appears to med that poor Rey got a lot of medicines for such a small puppy. I was under the impression the puppy had a lot of the mother’s antibodies protecting it for a few months after birth. Praying all goes well for your 🐶 pup🙏

Did you change her food from what Wright Way was feeding her? If so, could be a good allergy. Our dog Ellie has severe food allergies, which of course we didn’t know when we got her. One of her worst allergies was to rice, so giving her the bland diet of rice and meat only made diarrhea worse. Vomiting is what to watch for - if she vomits consistently she needs to see vet ASAP, as a dog can get so dehydrated that it starts to shut down organs. Is she peeing? Could be a bladder infection too.

Geez, heartworm and flea and tick on such a young dog? Get another Vet, that is so not needed and very toxic. Go get some diarreha medicine for human babys at Walgreens. Give very small amounts, will clear it up. Get an eyedropper too some baby food (meat), Feed the dog slowly by putting the food in the side of its mouth, not down the throat. Do the same with small amounts of water, the dog needs it. Best of luck.

I’m not looking to stir the pot nor banter or argue with anyone I promise you this post is in good faith only Our Georgia was 1 when we adopted her from Wrightway . She came from Memphis. Solo. What a stressful life to start. 😭She was full of diarrhea and we are 1st time dog owners. Wrightway stayed by our side the whole time to clear it up! She needed 2 different meds. Sometimes there’s tweaking to be done. And pumpkin purée helped a ton not pumpkin pie filling like I said earlier pumpkin purée it took a couple of weeks. She is now a happy healthy beautiful little girl. I think people forget. you are rescuing dogs. Key word “rescue”. We know there will be bills down the line, there were bills in the beginning, God willing she grows to a very old age and we know that is part of it as well. And there will be more bills , Of course no one wants to start out with a big problem . that’s nobody’s wish of course. It’s easy to panic and then its sets a fire of blame and anger and being first time dog owners we knew nothing about dogs. that being said . I will say this . all three of my daughters are adopted from China. 1 at 8 mo. 1 @1 yr and my youngest was 3 and died 2 times in China due to a medical overdose in a hospital for a simple hemangioma and****I have no medical history on any of them***** it doesn’t change the fact that they are my children forever and I apply that same thought to my dog whom I have zero history on and love as much as my children. She is our family It’s easy to get spooked by people jumping to conclusions! I myself would absolutely go to the vet and the first thing check for parVo just to be safe because it’s scary and I get that. But work with Wright-Way ☺️every time we needed something they answered us then we came and they medicated her. Twice. Its not a perfect science and at the end of the day she is a happy healthy beautiful girl about to be 2 March 1. Please everyone remember. Its “RESCUE”. That means you are in it for the whole thing! I promise you they never charged us to get her Diarrhea under control. its a huge adjustment for these pups and they come from really rural areas. God know what they carry? You can never know it all. Wrightway is so clean. Stop by and peek in the window when they are closed. You will see nothing but cleaning going on I promise. I have seen them start at one end mopping everything out and disinfecting it and along comes a little sprout of diarrhea out of three cages and those puppies are pulled back out and the cleaning began again! I am in no way employed by them i promise or a volunteer. But i feel like the attack on them is really over the top. If you’re on the wrightway Rescue reunion page you’ll see far more wonderful success stories of beautiful families blended with a beautiful animal brought into their lives by wright way. I don’t doubt that there are probably some terrible sad stories as well. I acknowledge you and am so sorry that happened BUT. the whole thing is a crapshoot if you want to just be plain honest about it? People love and hate restaurants, people love and hate services, and there will always be people loving and hating rescues. It applies to everything and there will always be opposite ends of the spectrum on anything you acquire in life! Nobody wants a sick puppy please don’t start a panic I know for a fact they are doing the best they can and it’s pretty darn good. NO. GREAT. Pic of my 4 adopted children 1 has paws 🥰 They are all just “my children”. FOREVER no matter what comes up. Whom all started with the un known. I hope everybody reading this takes it with the best of intentions as I mean no harm it’s easy to say I had a success story and you did not and I completely acknowledge that but I just want you all to keep in mind that all of these dogs are a crapshoot to be brutally honest. We have to know that walking in there or any shelter, or any breeder for that fact.
