Good morning! My car was stolen yesterday night near greenwood Dunkin donuts, Park ridge. Car was on and unlocked. My husband is not sure whether theft insurance is covered in the policy. We immediately informed cops and they registered the case. Is that something I have to keep in mind or in particular I should do until the end of getting this settled. My mind is blank and can't think or plan anything. Thanks!

I had my car stolen last summer. If your house keys were also taken then change your locks. Also may need to reprogram your garage door if they have the garage opener. Check if your insurance has rental coverage for a car while they find yours . Good luck

I don’t believe so if you left the keys in the ignition with the car running

Reset you garage opener right away. Then re-pair your devices.

I did the same thing last year in front of my house, my insurance company still covered it! I had a rental car for a little over a month, car was located and insurance covered repairs, if it wasn’t found in a certain timeframe they said they would cut me a check. Good luck!

It’s a process and never seems to end but good luck.

It could be covered but it often takes several weeks to get paid out. Lots of stolen cars are recovered within a couple of weeks because they’re usually abandoned within that time frame. So if the car is recovered, the insurance company won’t issue the check. If they issue the check and the car is recovered, then the insurance company will take the car to sell at auction. Good luck, I hope things work out for you.

Probably not if you left it running with the keys in it.

Buying a new car last year I was surprised to learn that if keys are left in car, anyone can open the doors and start it. On the plus side it's impossible to lock your keys inside.

There may be info in the glove box with your home address, so change your house locks too!

Google: If your auto insurance policy includes comprehensive coverage, you should be covered up to the Actual Cash Value (ACV) of your vehicle in the event your car has been stolen or damaged during a break-in. However, the liability and collision portions of your insurance will not cover car theft. We recommend you file a police report immediately, then contact your insurance provider to determine if you are protected and to begin the claims process.

I’d delete this post depending on what insurance you have they could search social media accounts. And because you left the car unlocked and running is usually a cause for insurance not to cover loss.

There was a license plate found near Trader Joe’s with a plate beginning with BV, was this your plate? It was a front plate with a McGrath frame from the dealership

If there were car seats in the car - make sure you replace them if you get the car back. Never know if there was a fender bender and the seat may be unusable anymore.

Do not tell the insurance company you left your car running and unlocked. Depending on the insurer they could try to get out of it due to negligence.

I don’t know if they cover you when you leave it on and unlocked.
