Wait till next week. We're going to have a chilly morning Saturday. I'd keep them outside to harden in the daytime and bring them in for evening if it's down in the 40s. Around Chicago, average last day of frost is around May 13. Wouldn't do it before then. Few years were exceptions. Hot years like 2012 and 1988 come to mind.

Dana, don't plant them under any circumstances. My dad is the master gardener and he warned me! We're expecting a hard frost this weekend and the tomatoes will die. Wait to plant until next week, midweek. That's exactly what my dad told me when I asked him.

Mine are all in pots as are my herbs. And if the forecast holds steady for the weekend they will have a nice overnight stay in the garage. And I’ll cover or dome the flowers.
