My relatives from NYC come to Chicago via Amtrak and never had a bad experience.

I have gone to Upstate NY (with my 2 kids) It is a LONG train ride (over 20 hours) and ran about 4 hours late. The first 16 hours weren’t so bad and then after that, it was tough. (And you did not want to use the bathroom at all after that time because they were a mess).

I've gone to new Orleans and salt lake city on the Amtrak. we got a sleeper car with a bathroom and your meals from the dinning car are included with the sleeper car too

Yes. Very long. People snore. There are smells and you are literally right next to someone you don’t know for hours on end.

Hmmm I'm thinking flying sounds like a better option! 😂

The lady behind was clipping her nails. I was disgusted, and never want to take a train in the US again.

I’ve taken it from Chicago to Syracuse. To my knowledge it only leaves Chicago at like 9pm and you arrive In Syracuse around 11am. Keep in mind if you haven’t taken the train that you could be delayed by hours. Amtrack is considered low man on the totem pole so other trains get to use the tracks. Once time we were delayed like 3 hours because we had to stop for other trains to pass. I’m not sure of the cost. The nice thing about leaving Chicago is it’s the first stop and they seat you according to where you get off. Sleeping was just ok. On the way back its another another story. Couldn’t sleep for nothing because people from every stop were in our car and every time the train stopped it would wake me up.

I have gone Chicago to Buffalo, NY. I agree with the comment above about a sleeper car. The train stops a lot. And even if you have space to spread out in the regular car, it isn’t comfortable. Sleeper car is the way to go.

I usually fly for $150-$200 RT. I took the train once and definitely prefer to fly.

I recently took an overnight trip to Buffalo NY in a sleeper car. The overall experience was fine except I woke up at least 15 times during the night because of stops.

If you are going to NYC it is cheaper and much more comfortable to fly. Take it from a New Yorker who loves trains and has travelled these roads every which way for 50 years. I like hopper or orbitz to find the cheapest flights but typically book on the airline site. Lately it is not uncommon for me to book one ways on different airlines for outbound and return flights to get the best for the money. Let me know if you want tips on airport transfers to/from midtown Manhattan.
