So, my son was cited for having possession of electronic smoking devices (stupid vape pens) and now has to either pay a $500 fine or take a class and have the fine reduced to $125 by Park Ridge. (They really weren’t thinking of single parents with no support when they put that rule into effect, because trying my damn hardest to keep my son away from those things isn’t hard enough, let’s make me pay a huge fine too 🙄 but I digress). I’ve been trying to get ahold of someone for him to take this class, but not having any luck. So my question is, what happens if the fine isn’t paid by the day of the hearing? And does anyone know if there is a payment plan available?

Or maybe ask for community service he can do at the school and take the class as well

How old is your son and why isn’t he paying the fine?

I agree. Punish the kids by making them clean the parks , streets etc

Also, I know this has been debated to death, but I still find it odd if they are caught with marijuana it goes to peer jury and no class.

A few questions: where was he busted? Does he care that you have to pay this fine? I feel for u but I also do not want my tax dollars going to “re-educate” these kids. We have spent so much money with assembly after assembly from grammar to middle school. If ur son doesn’t care that u have a hardship paying for his stupidity then take this as a wake up call and do whatever u can to save him. Cause this will only be the beginning

Thanks for everyone tagging Terri - I’ve left her two voicemails and an email as that’s who I was told to reach out to 😉 My son IS earning the money himself, but I just don’t know if he can make it by the 3/10 date. Which is why I asked for a payment option? If it has to be paid by that date, then I of course will be the one to pay it. I do like the idea of community service in its place tho.

Better tell him to go out and make money. Also to take that class.

When kids get caught vaping in school they’ll have to pay a fine , sit through a class and listen which will go in one ear and out the other . Not to mention the parents pay the fine . Give the kids detention and make the clean the school grounds Saturday morning for 4 hours

I believe they run the classes, try calling them. The city (if the ones enforcing the ticket) should have a payment option. http://www.mcyaf.com/

I believe you can ask for an extension to pay the fine if you can’t make the March deadline. I would explain that your son is working toward the fine and that he needs more time.

John Moran, you want to field why the city council thought this $500 fine was necessary?

This program was originally to have more than one educational company being offered to students. Has that been fixed? One company shouldn’t be profiting from our students and all options should be given at the time of ticket. Anyone have recent data on ticketing? Last Ginger L Pennington checked there was a disproportionate number of students being ticketed at one school - the most racially diverse. (corrected) Is to ticket or not to ticket decided by D207 Board or the PRPD? Looking for who’s accountable. Is the current ticketing policy implemented in all cases at all schools whereas all students are ticketed every time including first offense? John Moran Teri Collins

Why would they be thinking of single parents when they created this ? I’m sure that was the last thing on THEIR mind! 🙄 Why the special privilege? Are you for real? They figure if you’re dumb enough to do it, and maybe get caught, you broke a rule, no break. Sorry! 😝

Here is a web article about some of the issues. Good intentions behind the program but unfortunately not research based or effective. be sure to check out the links / footnotes for more info, Tasia. . https://www.parkridgeperspectives.com/.../v0hrvftow3hvilw

This might be a silly suggestion, but could this site be used to find paying chores for your child? Are there neighbors he can help out? Just a thought.

The student was able to afford the device and the stuff to vape so make him responsible for the fine and or the class - sorry you are dealing with this - good luck and be glad they caught your son before he has lung issues

I am sorry you are going through this. From my experience when my son was younger and had to pay a fine that I could not afford to pay. We went to his court date and ask the judge for more time. my son had earned about $100 shoving snow (he was also under the legal age to get a job) and asked the judge for more time to come up with the fine since he was wrong and didn't want to have me pay the fine. The judge gave him a new court date 3 months later.

Franklin what was the youth program for kids that got in trouble that you were apart of?

It’s a zero tolerance policy. We went through all that back in the day. Our daughter did the community service which was a joke and paid half the fine. I was not going to be financially inconvenienced and made daughter work off the debt.

FYI on the costs (at least this was the cost structure a year ago). It’s actually $190 out of pocket for class option. $125 to Teri, rest to court fee and City.

Does anyone have a blank or redacted version of the citation our Park Ridge police hand out for vaping? Picture of front and back of it to show what is on the citation about options for the class?
