This is Finn, Finn has lysomal storage disease a terminal diagnosis around Park Ridge. He is 11 months old, blind and has weak back legs. Because of his diagnosis our vet suggested we only give him mandatory vaccines and nothing extra and just let him live out his final days. My kids forgot to close the gate after school and Finn was found by Park Ridge police approximately 3 houses away. He had no colar because anything around his neck freaks him out. I got 100$ dog at large ticket. A 50$ no tags ticket and a 30$ pound fee. Anyone have experience with this? Do you think if I go to court they may take the tickets away given the circumstances? Or should I just pay it and not waist my time?

Probably just pay it. Lesson learned for the kids to close the gate. Unless you have the time to try. But if you are taking off work for it; probably won't save any money in the long run.

It wouldn’t hurt to appeal it in writing and your best bet would be to plea to the police department in person, maybe your tickets miraculously disappear.

I'm so sorry that happened :( I don't know that I would bother trying to fight it, but I totally think all of that is uncalled for. A pound once had to hold my dog for 2 weeks and didn't charge me a dime because it was out of my control. I'm sorry they couldn't be that understanding

My little one got out, made the trip to the station to pick her up. got the same fines (no collar/tags/city registration) Paid the fine, i was in the wrong for not following the laws of the town.

There’s no risk to going to the adjudication hearing. The hearing officer will hear the case and determine if you should pay the fines or not. Either way, there are no extra fees for having a hearing so you might as well plead your case.

Tbh, it's kind of understandable. If he had tags, they would have been able to contact you which would cancel out the pound fee. I understand he has some health issues and the collar freaks him out but it's super important to have. especially when you add children to the mix. Find something lightweight and condition him so he gets used to it. Just in case something like this happens again.

I would fight it. Once they hear the reasoning for him not wearing a collar, they may discharge the case. It all depends if you get someone with a good heart. Good luck, and enjoy your time with Finn. He’s adorable.

I think you’d have a shot. I can’t believe the police wrote this considering the situation with this poor pup. Unbelievable. God Speed to Finn and your family.

But if you have all the documents about his condition, appeal it. No harm in trying. Maybe once they realize the situation, they'll be understanding.

It's a shame but something has to pay for those additional services that were provided to you above and beyond normal everyday city services. The police had to take time away from doing important police work and the pound had to board your dog. Either you pay it or the taxpayers do. Fact is that your kids left the gate open and that's why he got out. Glad he is home safe.

I also have a dog who won’t wear a collar. I cannot even explain how much he freaks out. There is no conditioning either, it’s just not going to happen. That being said, I think it’s fair to contest the no tags ticket, but perhaps pay the dog at large fee, because regardless of everything, it happened and thankfully the police got him before he got hurt.

Omg! I'm glad he's home! I think, knowing him, that some considerations to his special needs should be heard

I think your best chance would be if he was registered (you have the tag), but he just won’t wear it. If you never registered him, then they can argue you need to pay that $50. The other fees are probably more subjective. Good luck! Sorry he’s so sick. 😢

Actually, I would fight it. Because they couldn't call and because they didn't know his health issues, they wrote tickets. Just like traffic tickets, they can't really cancel them once they've written them. But, it could be overturned at the hearing. It can't hurt! No one with a heart would give you anything more than a warning

Wait, is he microchipped? If they scanned him and got the chip info they would have been able to contact you just as if he was wearing a tag. Should at least negate the no tag ticket. If they didn’t scan him, they should have, and should still negate the ticket because the dog technically does have ID then and not your problem if they were lazy about it.

Totally fight it and bring his tags as proof and any medical documentation re: condition. You are his advocate fight for him poor baby.

It seems harsh and I’d be pissed if that happened to us, but it takes effort by the police to locate the owners whether they are 3 houses away or 3 miles. If he’s chipped, I might fight the no tag fee, but it’s only $50 and life is too short to fight over $50. I feel for you, but I think I’d just be happy to have my dog back safely, pay the $$, and consider it a donation to the City of Park Ridge, which usually tries to do the right thing. At least our animal licenses are still pretty cheap if that makes you feel better.

We had a lovely person babysitting our dog. She took him to her house to shower or something and left him in a fenced yard with his lease on. All that was fine, she didn't realize that he could squeeze through. He wanted to go home. He was found running down Cumberland and I got similar tickets. Go to city hall, buy any license that you need(if applicable) and go to court explained situation. Maybe get note from vet too. I was excused from the fines, you may be as well. Good luck.

Omg what a sweet baby i am so sorry. And omg so rude really?!?! 3 fees? Ummm crabby much? I feel like if you fought it you would win. The cop wouldn’t show up for this. But the effort and time to do it is also hard.

Blaming our police for doing the right thing is wrong! I think the Park Ridge Police do a great job! They found your dog and did their job! If you go to court and explain the circumstances I believe you will get all the charges dropped!

The major and I assume the police department are in this forum. They are good people with empathy. I would suggest they make an exception and write your tickets off.

Plead your case and be an advocate for your pup. Helps to create an awareness of dogs with special needs.

My sincere sympathy to you. I am so glad he was found. I agree with many. go to court and plead your case . If nothing more, it may bring awareness to this issue, specially if you have his tags and are in law compliance.
