Hello folks, talk me through something in Park Ridge. I think my kids are old enough to go spend time at the air show without meltdowns (probably my first mistake🙂). I have read a ton of things about where to go to see the best stuff blah blah blah. I'm now second guessing it based on crowds, not that i fear them i just don't want any meltdowns myself. So here are my questions: 1) is saturday and crowds worth it? My kids are early risers, we can be on the beach at 7am if needed! What do we do all day to pass the time? Can we bring a canopy? 2) is friday just as good? Where do we go for best views on Friday? Is it spread out all day? I love the air show, used to go every year in my 20s, but this seems like a new ballgame. Thanks!

We try to go the day before the actual Air and Water Show. They do practice runs and it is usually much less crowded.

We sat at Oak Street Beach, next to the actual beach- because there is a tunnel with washrooms! A must if you have smaller kids! Plus they have food vendors close by. Avoid North Ave. Beach. I'm not sure about tents. I don't remember seeing any.

Be careful. there is no such thing as crowd control

Go to North Avenue Beach on Friday-you’ll see the practice runs minus the people

We’ve done a few different ways and best experience is Friday at oak street beach for the practice runs! If you can only do Saturday the Fullerton beach area or very north end of North Ave beach with lots of green space to run around are best. I’d bring a canopy and a picnic basket. Parking is tough at Fullerton but if you go early enough you can park in Zoo parking or us spot hero.

You could always try to stake out a spot (outside seating at a restaurant/park) near the lake, but not near the crowds. Heck I have been at Cubs games and saw them practice overhead haha.

When we’ve gone we sit on the concrete between oak street and north avenue. Less crowded and easier to leave when it’s all done, we typically get there around noon.

I used to go to Lincoln park zoo for a few hours with the kids on Friday and then walk over to the lake (dont know the name of the beach there) and it was perfect. I hate crowds and this was never too crowded. Its been about 5 years so I dont know how it is now, but I would say go Friday.

We park and set up canopy and chairs just outside Lincoln park zoo between lake shore drive and the zoo. Not crowded and you can see everything except boats. A bonus is Blue Angels fly directly overhead as they turn into the city to loop around. so close you can see the pilot👍

Are your kids sensitive to loud noise? Bring ear plugs

They practice the day before. Anywhere along the lakefront is fun. We have even done Lincoln park zoo. Walk around looking at animals and get to planes overhead.

We make a day at the beach out of it, arrive around 7AM, park in the zoo lot - - expensive but it’s just once a year:-) and we walk in at Fullerton and stay on the beach near the water halfway between Fullerton and North Ave. Not too crowded there. Great view, nice and close to the action. Bring picnic food or there are also a lot of concessions with food. Been doing it that way for years, it never fails. We go on Sat or Sun, depends on weather. No meltdown if you just get there early and take it easy.
