Let me try to save you a headache and potentially a lot of money by Park Ridge. Even if your tree is dead and falling onto your car near the road in the parkway. do not cut them down! contact the city ASAP. I had 2 spruce trees next to my driveway, that were clearly planted by the previous homeowner. (no city plants spruce trees as parkway trees). and they were dead, and dropping limbs on my cars. I had them cut down thinking they were mine and my responsibility. Well, since they were in the parkway, they are considered City property. I was issued a violation. The fine is $1000 per inch of tree. my trees were 14 and 15 inches Diameter . so the fine was $29, 000. I just about lost my mind when they said we will settle for $14, 500. Thankfully they realized the trees were dead in their forestry department already, and settled with me and decided to only make me pay for 2 new trees. At least they had some common sense and realize I was not acting in a malicious manner and ripping out trees. they were dead anyways. Final verdict $750 for 2 new trees. That still is not great, as I paid $800 for removal already, but I guess I will have to live with it . I made a mistake and didn’t get a permit, and I’m not happy about paying for 2 new trees, but I guess it could have been way worse. Get a permit!

Thank you for sharing this information. Not everyone here might be aware of the status of parkway trees. Sorry you had to go through that nonsense with the city.

We had a dead tree in the parkway, and the city took it down quickly as it was a hazzard. The joy of parkway trees. They are the responsibility of the city. We are not even supposed to prune them!

You are NOT allowed to TOUCH any tree according to the City. Parkway or PRIVATE. If you decide to trim your tree or a neighbor's tree that is overhanging on your property--the CITY CAN and WILL fine you if they say it was not done according to their standards. Call first and good luck!

We have Davies tree's prune our private trees. They used to be Hendricksen Trees. They won't touch the parkway tree, but have always trimmed our tree's- no permit required. They do a ton of work in the city. You do need a permit to take down a tree.

From the City's website: Parkway Policy In all residential districts, only grass and trees may be placed in the parkways. Grass shall be maintained by the abutting property owner and trees will be maintained by the City. Other materials pose a safety hazard. Materials such as cobblestones, logs or railroad/landscape timbers are not allowed. Boulders up to 2' in diameter are allowed under certain conditions. Call 847-318-5228 for further information. Tree Removals Parkway Tree Removals - Parkway tree removals are performed by the City of Park Ridge. If you are concerned about the health of your parkway tree please call the Forestry Division at 847-318-5228. Private Tree Removals - A permit is required for any private tree removal 10 inches or greater in diameter (measured 45 inches from the ground). A tree removal application may be applied for in the Building Department. For any tree removal questions, please call the Forestry Division at 847-318-5228. I didn't find anything pertaining to tree trimming, but I didn't look very hard, either.

It is for ANY tree not just parkway. We had one in our backyard we had to get a permit for.

PR is also strict with permits. It took them 3 months and rechecking for a small plumbing rehab.

That’s a lot of money for 2 new trees. I’ve done a share the cost and only had to pay $150 per tree.

Many thanks to this group. We have a few older trees in the back of our yard that are unsightly due to being cut by utility for wires. Of course they need to do that which we understand. But as much as I love trees they really are pretty ugly now and getting to the point of being super sparse although still alive. I was going to look into having a company take down this summer - now I know to contact the village to make sure we don’t run afoul of any procedures! And so sorry for the original poster - at least you got the cost somewhat down - but still - jeez!

Didn't the people that cut your trees realize that a permit was needed?

Thank you for the warning. I have a dying spruce, as well, that will need to come down in the next few years. I would have just cut it down because it is my tree that is in my yard. I knew if the tree was living and in good shape it couldn't be cut down without a permit. I thought a dead one was fair game. Now I know the city owns the trees in my yard. Maybe they should pay part of my tax bill too.
