Mine is hard wired with a battery back up & does this because we are overdue for our weekly test. U find a sturdy ladder & press the "test" button once or twice (ur close and its loud so cover ur ears) and it should stop chirping
We have hardwired with battery backup. It's either the battery or the whole thing needs to be replaced. They last about 10 years. We just had to replace all of ours.
There should be a date on the back of the unit if its approx tens years old it should be changed if its hard wired it does usually have a battery backup and most likely the battery is dead change the battery it should be good but look for the date on the back too
This happens to ours every 3-4 years. Even ones hard wired have back up 9V batteries in them. When it chirps like this usually the backup battery needs to be replaced.

There isn't a fire. It's beeping like we need to change the battery, but there's not battery to change.
Replace the whole thing. Happens even with battery ones
Check for a battery back up in the unit.

Dumb question, but would an electrician need to change it?

Ours did this and even when we took it down, kept chirping. It was possessed. Lol, and irritating. Finally, replaced it with a new one.
It has a battery in it even if it is hard wired. Time to change it.
Our hard wired ones have batteries too.

Thank you!
Ours did that. we took it down and it's sitting on my counter for me to go buy a new one to replace it.
Battery back up. We had this happen and it made us crazy
We had to call the fire dept. When that happened to us. so annoying!
There is a battery backup in there in case the power goes out. The chirp indicates the batteries are dying. Change them.
