Equal amounts of water and vinegar in a spray bottle and keep spraying the trail. Hate the smell but, I've done this successfully and never had ants again.

We were getting them and I spread talcum powder at the trim where they were coming in and that stopped them. But it was a mess.

We used Ortho Home Defense. It's safe for animals and kids once it drys. We sprayed the outside and inside and haven't had them back. We do it every year.

Borax and water! I swear by this. I'll look for the exact mixture.

Terro! The sticky liquid. They come and eat and then they come no more. It's a death march!

I would say the ant traps at Walgreens there brand works the best. And clean with vinegar kinda helps

This is a good link. We had Carpenter ones and didn't realize that Borax was ineffective until after we used it. It will work with other types of ants, however. http://www.diynatural.com/how-to-get-rid-of-ants-naturally/

Bait not spray depending on type. Spray will separate colonies and spread the problem worse.

Diatomaceous Earth is safe around kids and pets. People even eat it (food grade, not the stuff used in pool filters). It gets into the exoskeleton and cuts up their insides and the bugs dehydrate to death. You should be sure to get it in under all your baseboards and between trim and the walls throughout the whole house. Even upstairs, ants drop off of trees and come in up there too. You can buy some online, it's not too expensive.

Depending on what you're dealing with, bay leaves may work.
