PSA: There were 2 women who decided it was a good idea to cross NW HIGHWAY last night nowhere near a light or intersection within Park Ridge. They just walked out into the middle of the road near St. Andrew Lutheran. It was around 6pm and very dark ( no street lights) and raining. They were both in dark clothes. I came THISCLOSE to running them over. I have great eyes and they were on the road. Zero distractions. Please be careful out there. When you cross a street, LOOK BOTH WAYS, cross at an intersection and don't try to rush across the road! Poor lightning and weather conditions can kill you!

They are lucky you didn't hit them! People exhibit little common sense now. You pull out of a spot and they walk right behind you. You pull out of a spot and the car next to you can't wait for you to pull away and they pull out too causing a jam so no-one can get by. Self-centered idiots everywhere!

You should see the parents at the cross walk at the school. they don't even wait for the crossing guard! It's insane. Too many people think everyone should be looking out for them, and not looking out for themselves. Glad you didn't hit them!

I so agree with you Sara Brown-Provis. This city is way too dark and not enough people wear reflective clothing, let alone cross at the light!

I agree people should be more careful. but this thread just reminds me that I keep meaning to ask- why is this town so freaking dark? I run early and I can't even see the sidewalk in the morning. In the winter when I take my kids for walks after 4 pm it's pitch black out and incredibly unsafe crossing over streets. Does anyone know why there are minimal lights in park ridge?

Even at a crosswalk I pull out my cell and be sure to have the screen (if not the flash light) on full bright. Along that note, I'm always amazed at how many parents teach their kids to run out in the street. which is basically what they're doing when they run with them across the street but not at the crosswalk.

Yep, pedestrians like playing chicken. it is getting worse and worse. amazing how many don't think about the destruction they will cause by getting hit/killed.

Isn't there a light at Elm, right by St Andrews? I Don't think there is a pedestrian button there. You have to wait for a car to stop on Elm.

Cars must "exercise due care to avoid colliding with any pedestrian" according to the Illinois Vehicle Code. The pedestrians not in the cross walk do not have the right of way, but the car must take measures to avoid them.

Unfortunately pedestrians (and drivers) are self-absorbed and/or just plain not thinking about what they are doing. We could all be more mindful about what we are doing.

Scary! I am always worried that I might hit someone around here when it is dark out. In the morning - there are a lot of runners out. They tend to run in the street but unless they wear reflective gear - I usually don't see them until I am quite close.

I'm very mindful when I drive, no cell phone, not even hands-free, I don't even change the radio station, but I've noticed as I get older, I have more trouble seeing in the dark, especially when they wear hoodies or dark clothes.

The night before last, my hubs almost ran over a kid riding a bike in the MIDDLE OF CUMBERLAND. On the double yellow line. the kid went around a car turning left. Of course the kid was all in black. It was raining and it was rush hour. what is wrong with people?
